Leadership isn't just about guiding others. It's about being deeply connected to yourself in the process.

In this vulnerable and profoundly nourishing conversation on episode 25 of The Sensitive. Podcast, I'm joined by leadership coach Alexandra Covucci to explore what it really means to lead from within.

We unravel the myth of polished perfection, talk about the ache that many sensitive entrepreneurs feel to create and be seen authentically, and explore how our businesses can become an extension of our inner world, not an escape from it.

Whether you're leading a business, a movement, or your own healing, this is a conversation about reclaiming the kind of leadership that nourishes you while you nourish others.

    Leadership That's Felt, Not Performed

Alexandra shares: "To me, leadership is less about being followed and more about being felt."

And if you're someone who leads with your nervous system, who senses subtleties, who tracks energy, who feels the incongruence when something is off, you already know the truth of this.

The traditional models of leadership many of us inherited were built for performance, metrics, and productivity. But as neurodivergent and highly sensitive leaders, we crave something different: integrity, depth, and presence. Not just looking good on the outside, but feeling true on the inside.

In Alexandra's words, "Leadership is self-connection in movement." And from that place, you don't have to outsource your worth, your strategy, or your presence. You become the leader of your own life first, and everything else ripples from there.

The Ache to Create and the Fear of Slowing Down

We talked about something I know so many of you can relate to: that aching, pulsing desire to create just for the sake of creating, but also the fear of what might happen if we stop producing, stop performing, stop "being useful."

Whether you're a mother, a solopreneur, a multi-passionate neurodivergent being (or all three), it's so easy to get pulled into constant output. Business models, content demands, the pressure of consistency—they all tug at us to keep going, even when our inner artist is starving.

Alexandra said it beautifully: "I see a lot of longing for rest, for creativity, for connection. But also a deep fear of slowing down."

If you've been chasing strategy to avoid yourself, if you've felt disconnected from the why behind your work, this is your invitation to pause, listen, and return to the relationship that matters most: the one with yourself.

Self-Partnering as the Bedrock of Leadership

Here's a truth that might take time to integrate: Your relationship with yourself shapes everything you touch. Your offers. Your content. Your boundaries. Your energy.

If you're disconnected from your own emotional life, you'll struggle to stay present with your clients. If you neglect your own needs, your business model will reflect that.

Alexandra and I both share the belief that self-partnering, truly being in your own corner through every season, is the foundation of sustainable leadership. Not in a performative way, not to use your pain as a branding tool, but in the quiet, behind-the-scenes tending that nobody else sees.

This is the work that prevents burnout. The work that allows you to keep showing up without performing over your truth.

Why Sensitive Entrepreneurs Feel So Much

Sensitive, neurodivergent, and high-capacity people often internalize shame around their emotional depth, their creative cycles, and their sensory needs. We turn the criticism inward. We try to contort ourselves to fit the "shoulds."

But what if the very things you've been taught to see as weaknesses (your depth, your nuance, your intuition) are actually your greatest assets as a leader?

This is especially true when you notice the incoherence of the online space. You can feel when someone's energy doesn't match their words. You sense the gap between performance and presence. And sometimes that makes you want to disappear entirely.

But what if your sensitivity was a gift, not a liability? What if your body's discomfort with fast-paced, surface-level growth is a sign you're ready for a new model?

    Leading Without Looking "Perfect"

So many of us absorbed the idea that leadership means always having it together. That to be respected, you must be polished. Presentable. Untouched by struggle.

Alexandra challenged that belief head-on: "I used to think leadership meant looking good. Now I know leadership means being in connection with myself."

There's no summit where you suddenly become worthy. No metric that makes you more valuable. The goal isn't to transcend your humanity. It's to integrate it.

The moments when you meet yourself in your messiness, your chaos, your burnout, and choose to stay? That is leadership.

And when you stop trying to perform your power, and instead begin feeling it, everything changes.

Redefining Success from the Inside Out

Success isn't about checking the boxes someone else gave you. Alexandra shared that one of the first things she helps clients do is assess what's actually working and what's just keeping them numb.

Sometimes what's "working" is actually helping you avoid discomfort. But what could you create if you stopped running and started feeling?

Real, sustainable success is about function, not performance. It's about how your business feels, not just how it looks.
